16 Year Old Mom Cathy Hughes Starts Radio One
Who would have thought that a young, 16 year old teen would become the CEO and owner of the first largest African-American owned broadcasting company in the US? Cathy Hughes proved her naysayers wrong by doing just that.
Cathy Hughes started the largest black owned broadcasting company in the United States while sleeping on the floor of her radio station. Starting her radio career at Howard University’s radio station, she eventually bought a radio station with her now ex-husband. After their divorce she nearly lost the station, but refused by losing her home instead.
With much sacrifice and persistence Cathy Hughes turned things around and grew her company into 16 urban markets with 53 stations. Not only did she expand Radio One she became the first African American woman to lead a company to be publicly traded.
Radio One’s Cathy Hughes proven that anything is possible.
