Black Business Is Important For Economics In Our Community

The Importance of Supporting Black Business Directories

Supporting black businesses has been a hot topic for years. Discussions can be very positive or sometimes downright negative depending on your audience. Today STL Black Biz discusses the importance of supporting Black businesses. We will also talk about supporting business directories and reasons for doing so.

After the Emancipation Proclamation Blacks were forced to find work, many times for their past oppressors or they were forced to create their own source of employment. Being the resilient people we are, many of us became entrepreneurs. This shift eventually highlighted the need to raise awareness of Black-owned businesses, leading to the creation of the Black Business Directory.

Black Business Directories

Supporting Black Business directories is essential because they serve as valuable resources for promoting economic growth, visibility, and community engagement within the Black community. Victor Hugo Green, the founder of The Green Book (one of the earliest black business directories), recognized this issue and took the initiative to address it.

The Green Book was created in 1936 to share safe places for Black travelers to use during the height of the Jim Crow Era. Finding a safe place to sleep and eat during travel could be a matter of life or death for African Americans. Local Black business directories in the St. Louis area such as The Black Pages of St. Louis, STL Black Biz, For the Culture, DeLux Magazine, and the Heartland St. Louis Black Chamber of Commerce eventually followed. Let us not forget The St. Louis Negro Business and Trade Directory dating as far back as 1934.

The State of Black Business Report by the Alliance for Entrepreneurial Equity (AEE) reveals that, despite the challenges faced by Black business owners, there continues to be steady growth. However, there is still progress to be made.

“Black business ownership directly leads to economic empowerment and wealth creation, but far too many Black entrepreneurs continue to struggle with systemic barriers that make it difficult to be successful,” National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said.

Black directories provide a platform that connects Black-owned businesses with consumers, highlighting the importance of supporting local Black Business Directories like STL Black Biz.

Many people are looking to shop Black businesses however, sometimes they have no idea where to start. Directories are the answer to this problem by offering increased visibility and access to Black businesses.

Black directories help preserve our culture by spotlighting and celebrating Black-owned businesses and fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration. With the advancement of technology, these directories now allow us to easily showcase Black businesses, accessible right at our fingertips.

By actively using and promoting Black business directories, individuals can contribute to a more equitable marketplace, foster economic independence, and celebrate excellence within the Black entrepreneurial community.
