Berry Gordy Creator of the Motown Sound

Berry Gordy is the founder Motown Records. Motown Records is the most successful, black owned music company in the history of the United States.

Motown Records was founded in 1959. Unlike many music companies today, Motown Records focused on serious artist development. Famous performers such as the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the Jackson 5 were groomed by Motown Records. In 1988 Motown Records was sold.

Berry Gordy began his career in the music industry by starting his music publishing company, Jobete. He later decided to open a record company instead, which he felt would be more lucrative. This turned out to be a move that would change his life.

Using a $800 loan from his family Gordy created Tamla Records in 1959.  The Motown label was created under Tamla Record and the Motown Sound was born. READ MORE……
