But the most impressive person in this story is not Emerial Lagasse. The real hero is Darnell Ferguson. Darnell Ferguson has a powerful story tied to his life.
Raised by his mom and step-dad Darnell still went astray and decided to do things his way. Darnell Ferguson struggled as a young man through high school. Instead of dropping out he graduated from a neighboring vocational high school where he studied Culinary Arts.
Ferguson went on to attend Sullivan University located in Louisville, Kentucky. Like many college students, he faced financial hardship due to his inability to pay his tuition and he found himself enrolling only part-time. Out of frustration he began selling drugs to make ends meet.
Eventually Darnell graduated from Sullivan University with an Associates Degree Culinary Arts, under the radar of law enforcement. Things seem to be pretty rosy so he continued his illegal activities of selling drugs, even though he possessed a degree. After countless arrest he decided that enough was enough.
“The last time getting locked up, I remembered being in class and them talking about being a statistic and how once you get in the system you can’t get out… I started thinking that now I’m the guy that I didn’t want to be… That’s when I told myself that I was going to get serious about something I know that I can do, which is cooking…” – Darnell Ferguson
Even though Ferguson was no longer dealing drugs he still had challenges regarding his attitude. His anger caused him to be fired and unemployed for over a year. He eventually joined church and changed his life for the better.
After months of being unemployed he ran into an old acquaintance, who was also owned a restaurant. Ferguson was given the opportunity use the space to serve breakfast as an independent restaurant owner. With that opportunity Ferguson has gone on to open three restaurants.
