My Blooming Health Mobile Female and Black Owned

My Blooming Health Mobile female and Black-owned is a clinical lab serving St. Louis and Illinois. Danita Smith is the first Black woman to open a mobile lab in Missouri. The owner Danita Smith is making mobile testing and screening options more readily available by making personal visits to customers in need of lab work.

Holding her BSN and MBA Danita Smith RN is the owner and operator of My Blooming Health Mobile. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from McKendree University and her MBA from Webster University. After working 20 years in corporate and with BJC Health Systems Smith made a bold move to start her own business.

My Blooming Health Mobile started as a blog but eventually grew into the first and only female, black-owned clinical lab located in the state of Missouri. This health organization brings the lab to you.

Services include specimen collections, courier services, mobile phlebotomy, EKG screenings and drug screenings.  They also offer DNA and Paternity testing. My Blooming Health works with the elderly, disabled and those customers unable to make it to a doctor’s office. Patients can receive service from their home or office. Customers have the option of their walk-in facility or taking advantage of mobile visits.

Danita Smith opens up on her journey to My Blooming Health Mobile.

How did you gain the courage to leave a secure job in order to step on your own to start My Blooming Health Mobile?

I prepared for this. I saved up what money I could. I bought a lot of things in bulk and stocked them in my basement for the rainy days when I knew that I would have more needs than I had money.

I planned for the evitable. I prayed daily for God to speak to me and to help me to know when it would be the right time to leave my job. I never heard His voice, but I continued to pray on it.

I got to a point when I realized I’d rather work on my company. Many days I sat in the parking lot for several minutes sometimes nearly an hour contemplating if I wanted to report to work or to go back home to work on my company. It consumed my everything.

At that point I knew I had to quit my job. I was not financially ready, but it was time for me to leave and transition.

Where did you come up with the idea to create such a service?

The idea of my mobile lab happened while I was at work.

I realized patients tended to fall into a black hole after discharging from the hospital. They failed to follow up with their doctor or their lab work. Although we prepared action plans to assist with reducing unnecessary ER admissions and frequent visits with the same diagnosis, I wondered what I could do to help our community even more. Being a nurse with more than 20 years of experience I knew that it was time to pursue my passion my way.

Would you do things differently?

If I knew then what I know now things would be totally different. I would probably be further along. I would change the way that I rolled out my company and prepared for staffing success, financial success, and maintaining healthy relationships with various providers.

Did you always have plans on becoming an entrepreneur?

I had no idea that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. However, I knew I wanted to move up the ranks in management and to be a decision maker in patient outcomes. BJC collaborated with a couple of universities with an MBA program, so I went for it. My BSN and my MBA prepared me to start My Blooming Health Mobile.

What practical advice do you suggest in running a smooth business?

I advise anyone debating stepping into entrepreneurship to map it out. At some point you have to just jump as Steve Harvey mentioned but, there must be a plan.

One of my mentors once said, “Danita you need to have a plan every single day once you leave your job, otherwise you will get nothing done while constantly running around and she was so right.” You need to have a daily task list and stick to it.

I also use my iPhone for all of my appointments and my Notes app to keep my thoughts on paper. This is a great help when something pops in my head.
